Dr. Blades created the POWARRful Teaching Strategies framework in 2018 to help students build their critical thinking and problem solving skills, based on recurring themes in her own teaching practices. From engaging in inquiry-based activities through to creating models to demonstrate learning, Dr. Blades observed that she was constantly teaching the same six core POWARR skills: Predict, Observe, Write, Analyze, Research, Report.
Noticing the prevalence and value of POWARR skills across all content areas (not just STEM!), she decided to formally organize the skills into a framework that would help other teachers increase student engagement while leveraging best teaching practices.
With more than 20 years of experience in education (teaching and beyond), Dr. Blades understands the need for both consistency and flexibility in the classroom. As such, she designed the POWARRful Teaching Strategies framework to be easily adaptable — it can be used within many other teaching strategies as a core structure that ensures students are actively involved in their learning process.
Since releasing POWARRFUL Teaching Strategies in 2018, Dr. Blades has shared the framework with thousands of educators across the US, giving them the tools and confidence they need to immediately put it into practice and build more student-centered classrooms.
It’s good when people TELL you what they did to become successful, but much better when they SHOW you what they did to become successful. - Dr. Marquita Blades
